• Subjects with sensitive skin had mainly dry or mixed skin, dermatological disorders, or were prone to skin reactions to cosmetics and various environmental factors.
• The researchers concluded that there was a high prevalence of sensitive skin in the U.S.
How to know you have sensitive skin
Combined with the conditions listed earlier, if you have any of these symptoms, it implies that you may have a sensitive skin. Symptoms such as:
- Burning, tingling, or tightening, particularly after using skin care or makeup products.
- Redness and rashes after exposure to cosmetic or household products.
- Redness, rashes, acne, and other reactions after shaving.
- Burning, dryness, or redness after exposure to cold and windy weather.
- Acne and other skin problems in reaction to stress.
- Regular skin irritation, dryness, flaking, and redness for unknown reasons.
- Skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis.

Natural remedies for sensitive skin
Avoid hot water
When you constantly shower with hot water, it strips your skin of its natural oils, thereby promoting dryness. Though there is a kind of joy that comes with having long hot shower, but for the sake of your skin, especially if it is sensitive, use warm or lukewarm water. Even when you shower, maybe you should keep it under ten minutes as showering for a longer duration may stripe your skin of its natural moisture, hence causing skin dryness and irritation. Make sure you wash your face last, and apply toner and moisturizer immediately you dry your face
Turn down the heat.
It’s almost always tempting to turn the heat up when there’s a chill in the air outside. And though this is okay to a certain point, the warm air produced when you heat up can dry up your out your skin. This can cause your already sensitive skin to dry out hence leaving it prone to irritation. To that effect, you might want to keep it cooler or you can try using a humidifier to give room for a little moisture.
Protect from sunscreen
Sun damage is one of the major causes of skin aging. It can also exacerbate inflammation and redness. Protect with hats, sunglasses, and a safe sunscreen like zinc oxide. During harsh weather, protect your skin with scarves and gloves.
Ditch scented Products
Most of your favorite scented products can cause irritation to your skin. Many of them have been linked with causing or most times exacerbating dermatitis and allergic skin reactions.
That is “Fragrance-free” and “hypoallergenic” should become your guiding principles when shopping for skin care and other products that will come into contact, directly or indirectly with your skin. Scented lotion might smell lovely in the bottle, but you might find yourself coping with discomfort after you’ve applied it to your skin. And while you may love to inhale the fragrance of a particular type of laundry detergent, your skin might disagree.
Taking stock of the number of products you put on your skin everyday is very important especially if you have a sensitive skin. If you put more than four products on your skin, you might want to consider cutting back. Maybe try going without makeup for some days, avoid bronzer, primer or highlighter for some days. You have to simplify in order to help your skin recover.
Wear gloves when cleaning.
If things are already touch-and-go when soap and water are involved, you’ll need to be even more careful when handling strongly-scented cleaning products, which often contain chemicals that can be especially abrasive to sensitive skin. Purchase a pair of long rubber gloves to wear when cleaning or handling cleaning agents.
Watch out for latex
People with sensitive skin may actually be allergic to latex. Latex allergies often develop after your skin is repeated exposed to latex and this can cause hives, itching and a lot of other symptoms. However, if you notice or suspect that you may be allergic to latex, make sure the gloves you wear when you are doing your chores or washing your care doesn’t contain latex.
Be careful of anti-aging products
It is true we all want to shave off some years off our age and look younger, but some of the products you use can make your skin red, scaly, itchy and the worst of it is that most of the times, our desired result is not achieved. Most of the anti-aging cream we use have a vitamin A derivative called retinoid. Retinoid have the ability to make fine line look smoother. The downside of this however can be very irritating. That being said, if you are looking for an anti-aging cream suitable for your skin especially if you have sensitive skin, you should consult your dermatologist.
Apply moisturizer after bathing.
Once you have showered and rinsed of f all the dirt in your body, the next thing you should immediately do is slather on a layer of moisturizer. Do not wait up, apply your moisturizer as soon as your skin starts to dry off. Look for a fragrance free jelly that will not irritate your skin. You can opt for petroleum jelly for some areas of your skin, especially if you are more prone to dry skin than you are to acne.
