Loss of appetite may be reversible and temporary. It is often linked with stress, anxiety and depression.
Lots of other issues can lead to loss of appetite including kidney failure, bacterial and viral infections, heart failure, dementia, chronic liver disease, Hepatitis. Medications could also contribute to the problem, too.
Luckily, there are home remedies that could help stimulate a poor appetite and make eating enjoyable. If you constantly lose your appetite, especially when it results in significant weight loss, then you may need to see the doctor so you can be evaluated and given proper treatment.

Here are the home remedies to stimulate a poor appetite

Indian Gooseberry

This is also known as amla. It helps boost appetite caused by gastrointestinal issues. Amla works as a tonic in the gastrointestinal system and improves the functioning of the digestive tract while also detoxifying the liver. When combined with honey, it helps reduce nausea and vomiting.
Plus, it has a great vitamin C content which helps to boost the immune system and facilitate mineral absorption. Both of these are important if nutritional deficiencies have resulted from the malnourishment.
To use, mix two spoons of honey, lemon juice and indian gooseberry juice. Drink it up every morning on an empty stomach for at least four months.
If using Indian gooseberry powder, add a teaspoon of the powder to a cup of water, allow to sit overnight before adding two teaspoons of lemon juice and a dash of ground black pepper. Drink it regularly on an empty stomach for a few months.
You can also take this tangy and refreshing fruit in the form of pickle.

Ginger

Ginger is excellent for relieving indigestion and stimulating appetite. In addition, ginger is great for alleviating stomach aches.
To use, take a quarter to one-half teaspoon of finely chopped ginger and add a pinch of rock salt to it. Consume it thirty minutes before your meals every day for eight to ten days.
You can also make ginger tea by chopping an inch of dried ginger into small pieces and boiling them in two cups of water. Mix in a little milk and sugar and drink a few times a day.

3. Black Pepper

Black pepper is often used as an Ayurvedic remedy to treat gastrointestinal problems, improve digestion and increase appetite. It also relieves stomach and intestinal gas.
Black pepper stimulates the taste buds which boosts the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, thus improving digestion. Plus, it also contains a compound known as piperine. This aids absorption of nutrients including Selenium, vitamin B and carotene.
To use,
• Combine one tablespoon of jaggery powder and one-half teaspoon of ground black pepper.
• Consume it on a regular basis for a few days.
Do not use this black pepper remedy if you have stomach ulcers or have had abdominal surgery.

Cardamom

Cardamom, or choti elaichi, works as a warming digestive tonic. It’s a great way to relieve indigestion, acidity and flatulence. It stimulates the secretion of digestive juices. To benefit from this, add ground cardamom seeds to your regular tea.

Carom Seeds

Carom seeds, also known as ajwain, are good for the digestive system. They treat indigestion and flatulence and help boost appetite. They do this by secreting digestive enzymes and acids.
You can chew half a teaspoon of carom seeds half an hour before meals.
You could also put three tablespoons of carom seeds in some lemon juice. Keep it in a dry, dark place until the mixture dries completely. Then, mix in a little black salt. Take one teaspoon of this mixture along with warm water, twice daily for a few days.

Dandelion Root

Dandelion root is known to promote digestion and regulate appetite. It also helps treat liver and gallbladder problems. It works as a mild diuretic as well.
To use :
• Prepare dandelion root tea by boiling powdered dandelion root in a cup of water for about five minutes. You can also add a cinnamon stick.
• Strain the tea. You may sweeten it with honey if you like before drinking it.
You can purchase dandelion root from a health food store. If you have dandelions growing in your yard, you can separate the roots from the foliage, clean and chop them into small pieces, and bake them in the oven at 250 degrees for two hours.
Before using this herb, consult your doctor to determine the right dose and be sure it will not interact with any medications you may be taking.

Garlic

Garlic is considered an effective home remedy for treating loss of appetite as it stimulates the digestive system.
To use :
• Boil three to four garlic cloves in a cup of water.
• Strain the solution and squeeze the juice from half a lemon into it.
• Drink this twice daily until you see improvement

8. Coriander

Coriander juice is beneficial for improving your appetite as it helps to boost the secretion of gastric juices. It is also good for relieving indigestion , colitis, gas, nausea, and other such ailments.
To use :
• Extract the juice from coriander leaves.
• Drink one to two tablespoons of the juice daily till the appetite increases. You can also add a little lemon juice and a pinch of salt to it.

Alfalfa

Alfalfa is a great stimulant for your appetite. It is also a liver cleanser and natural blood cleanser. It has diuretic properties and thus helps deal with kidney issues.
Overall, it’s great for the health as it is rich in calcium, potassium, zinc, iron, folic acid, vitamin A, B, C, D and K.
You can drink alfalfa tea. Prepare by steeping a teaspoon of dried alfalfa leaves in a cup of hot water for fifteen minutes.
You could also simply include alfalfa sprouts or seeds in your meals.
You can take about two ml of alfalfa tincture thrice daily. Keep doing so till you notice a lot of improvement.
It’s not advisable to take large doses of alfalfa. It’s safer to consult your doctor before using this herb as a remedy as it is not healthy for people suffering from an autoimmune disease, gout or other conditions.
Besides these home remedies, some simple yet effective measures can help improve your appetite like eating small but frequent meals, opting for your favorite foods and engaging in moderate physical exercise. If the problem persists, consult your doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.
