Stretch marks is one of the most annoying skin conditions to affect anyone, women are most concerned with them. They prevent you from wearing stylish clothes that have a tendency to show some skin. It causes a serious loss in self-esteem and confidence to sport certain wears which would have been suitable for certain occasions. The question this, what are stretch marks? A lot of us just know stretch marks by the looks, we can hardly explain what they are or what causes them. Here is a bit of information, stretch marks is simply defined as visible lines on the skin which are a different shade or color from the natural skin color.
In some people stretch marks cover very large areas of their bodies, especially the stomach and buttocks region, while in others it is a little bit smaller, mostly around the arms and thighs. Regardless of their size or zone of occurrence stretch marks are definitely a menace and must be gotten rid of if an individual wants to live a comparatively free life. According to our biology classes we were told that the skin is made of three major layers which include the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis, in layman terms these are the outside layer, mid layer and the inner layer. Stretch marks are known to form in the middle layer or dermis when the connecting tissue is stretched above its elastic limit such that it loses its flexibility. This stretching could be as a result of sudden expansion or shrinking of the skin.
Some major causes of stretch marks include:
- Rapid increase in weight
- Rapid loss in weight
- Pregnancy, etc.
