The skin under the eye is one of the most delicate parts of our body. Lots of habits like lack of sleep, alcohol, caffeine and lack of proper intake of water could result in dark circles around the eyes. Sometimes, these dark circles become so stubborn that it gets too difficult to get rid of.
Lots of beauty products have been introduced into the market to help get rid of the dark circles but sometimes the harsh chemicals in those products affect the skin and make things worse. Most times the products do nothing.
However, for some reason, it does not occur to us that all we may need to get rid of those ugly circles is a better lifestyle and healthy food. We do need to learn to consciously eat healthy and take lots of vitamins and water.
Drinking at least two litres of water every day and sleeping for at least seven hours will go a long way to fix your problem. You should also take hydrating foods, foods that possess antioxidants to help boost blood circulation and foods that are rich in minerals.
We’ve done our research and have come up with healthy foods that will help get rid of those dark circles real quick if taken regularly.

Foods That Can Help Get Rid of Your Dark Circles


Cucumber is a favourite among lots of people. Its hight water content will help keep your skin hydrated and supple.
Plus it contains collagen-boosting silica and sulphur that strengthens the skin.
It is also a rich source of vitamin K which boosts the elasticity of blood vessels and many other beauty-boosting vitamins.
You could simply eat a quarter of cucumber everyday.


Watermelon is one of the most delicious fruits in the world. It also has a high water content which is useful in hydrating the body and the skin. To be precise, watermelon contains approximately 92%water.
It also contains lots of antioxidants which help protect the eye and keep it healthy. Two of the numerous antioxidants it contains include beta-carotene and lycopene.
Other nutrients you will find in the watermelon include fibre, vitamin B1, B6, potassium, magnesium and vitamin C.
You can snack on some watermelon after it’s chilled. You could also make juices or smoothies from it.


Blueberries are popular for how beneficial they are to your eyes. They contain lots of antioxidants like anthocyanins and lutein which help protect the delicate blood vessels and boost blood circulation in the eyes.
Other nutrients found in blueberries include vitamin C, manganese, omega-3 and vitamin K. Simply snack on a handful everyday if as regularly as you can.


Tomatoes contain lycopene, among other antioxidants. This gives the fruit its bright red colour.
Lycopene is responsible for protecting delicate blood vessels and improving the circulation to the eyes.
Other nutrients in tomatoes include lutein, vitamin C, beta-carotene and quercetin (all antioxidants)
You can eat a medium tomato everyday or seven cherry tomatoes.


Celery is a rich source of electrolyte minerals like potassium and sodium. These minerals are powerful fluid regulators that will help reduce the dark circles and puffiness.
The sodium in celery is very different to white table salt as it helps promote the uptake of the other nutrients.
Other nutrients seen in celery include fibre, magnesium and quercetin.
You can snack on a stick, have them as side dishes or in salads.


Mulberries contain an antioxidant that defies age – resveratrol. It also contains hydrating sugars and iron.
It also contains protein, anthocyanins, vitamins A, B1, B2 and vitamin C. Simply eat a small handful daily.


Beetroots are another antioxidant rich food. One of such is the detoxifying betalanin which is responsible for the red pigment and is useful for the health of the eyes.
Other nutrients contained in the beetroot include folate, magnesium and vitamin C.
A daily intake of about eighty five grams will do.

Goji Berries

Goji berries contain hydrating carotenoid zeaxanthin that help boost the skin around the eyes. It also contains other nutrients like zinc, copper, iron, calcium, selenium, polysaccharides, amino acids, beta-carotene, vitamin B and vitamin C. Simply eat a handful everyday.


Baobab has low sodium levels and are highly dense with nutrients like potassium, fibre, calcium, zinc, bioflavonoids, magnesium, vitamin A, B1, B6 and vitamin C. These help balance fluids and reduce or prevent puffy eyes.
Simply eat at least one teaspoon a day.

Bee pollen

Bee pollen contains antioxidant rutin which helps circulation. It also contains proteins that help renew collagen and elastin. Other nutrients contained in the pollens include fatty acids, amino acids and lots of vitamins. Eat a teaspoon a day.
Caution : Children should not be made to take this. Also avoid if you have a bee sting allergy, pregnant or are breastfeeding.


Spiriluna is highly dense with nutrients, one of which is protein. The proteins help renew tissue while sulphur helps strengthen the skin. Calcium, antioxidants, fatty acids and vitamin B are present in the spiriluna. Eat a quarter teaspoon a day in a meal or have it in a drink.

Black Currant

Black currant helps boost the circulation of blood, especially to the optical nerve of our eyes. It contains anthocyanins which help supply oxygen to the tissues, this as a consequence reduces dark circles.


Sesame is often seen as a magic food containing vitamin E which helps to ease the formation of dark circles. It reduces dark circles by providing nourishment to the eyes.
Note the following :
• A healthy lifestyle is important to limit the appearance of dark circles. Be sure to eat diets rich in water and protein. Also drink lots of fluids and get enough sleep.
• Try quitting smoking and alcohol as these make dark circles way worse
• If you suspect that your allergies are contributing to the dark circles, go for an allergy testing.
• Cut your salt intake. Eating a diet that contains so much salt will make your body retain water which will cause the skin to puff up. This in turn makes the dark circles a lot more noticeable.
• Do not take so much caffeine as it causes dehydration which creates or worsens shaded rings. Limit or cut it from your diet to improve the look of the delicate skin beneath your eyes.
