Why Should You Use a Conditioner?
It’s baffling that shampoo gets all the attention for being just soap. Even though a good shampoo is nice, the need for a conditioner is way more important. Unfortunately, lots of lots of women skip this part of an ideal hair care routine because they don’t think they need to use a conditioner – they have a shampoo afterall. Everyone should own a conditioner. Even though it’s true that a conditioner is mainly used to detangle your hair, it has a whole lot of other benefits.
For starters, you should use a conditioner if you have a die on if you colour your hair. This is because when you use a shampoo, the cuticle is roughed up having to cleanse oils, dust and dirt particles in the hair. Some folks skip conditioning because they think it’s too greasy or not ideal for their hair types but this depends on the kind of conditioner you’re going for, it’s probably not ideal for your hair type.
It’s important to find the right one for your hair, do this instead of skipping conditioning altogether. Sometimes, the problem isn’t that the conditioner is greasy, it could just be that you’re not rinsing it properly. You should do so with warm or cool water for at least thirty seconds.
DIY hair conditioners
Honey and Olive Oil
Olive oil is a natural conditioner that nourishes and hydrates the hair while honey, a natural humectant helps to seal the moisture in the hair shaft.
- Four teaspoons of olive oil
- Two teaspoons of honey
- A shower cap
- Mix olive oil and honey in a bowl till you have a mixture with a smooth consistency.
- Divide your hair into four and begin applying the mixture to each section.
- Once the hair is completely covered, cover it with a shower cap.
- Leave it on for about thirty minutes before washing
- Rinse off with a shampoo that is mild and sulphate-free and then condition regularly.
- Repeat this procedure at least once a week or two times a month.
Olive oil and Egg
The yolk of the egg is useful in hydrating the hair, it contains fats that form a protective layer over your hair shaft to make it manageable and smooth.
- Two teaspoons of olive oil
- Two egg yolks
- Mix egg yolks and olive oil till you have a smooth mixture. If you have to add a little water, then do.
- Divide your hair into four sections and cover your hair with the mixture.
- Cover the hair with a shower cap afterwards and leave the mask on for a few hours.
- Wash Off with shampoo (preferably mild sulphate-free) and condition regularly. Use cool water, you don’t want the egg to get cooked.
- Repeat this procedure once a week.
Coconut oil is a well-known natural oil used for a variety of purposes ranging from skin care to medicinal purposes to hair care. It has been used for ages and has been found to be a great conditioner for the hair. Its fatty acid content and penetrative properties make it nourishing and able to condition your hair.
Three tablespoons of coconut oil
- Get the coconut oil heated to melt it and warm it up
- Dampen your hair a bit to make for easy penetration and begin to work your way through you scalp up to the tip of your hair with the oil
- Pay special attention to your hair tips as they need special attention
- When you’re done, wrap up your hair in a hot towel and let the oil sit for forty-five minutes before washing off with cool water and shampoo.
- Repeat this at least twice a week
Baking soda is effective in getting rid of dirt and impurities in the hair.
It also moisturizes and conditions your hair while making sure it is completely clean and rid of impurities.
- A quarter cup of baking soda
- Half a cup of conditioner
- A plastic bag or shower cap
- One hot towel (neat)
- Get a clean plastic bowl and mix some baking soda with half a cup of conditioner. Keep mixing until it is well-combined.
- Divide your hair into four sections and apply the mixture thoroughly onto your hair taking special care to make sure it goes through the roots and up to the tips of your hair.
- When you’re done completely covering the hair with the mixture, cover it up with a plastic bag or a shower cap.
- Wrap the hot towel over the shower cap and then let the mixture sit for at least one hour.
- Rinse your hair afterwards and shampoo before conditioning regularly
- Repeat this procedure once every month and note the difference.
