Rice water has been found to surprisingly useful to the hair and the skin. It has been recommended for healing wounds, burns and skin problems. It’s also been found to be useful in skin and hair rejuvenation.

Skin benefits of Rice Water

Rice water is effective in soothing skin inflammations, rashes, acne and a host of other problems. A study carried out in 2002 in Belgium found that patients who suffered from atopic dermatitis experienced improved symptoms after bathing with rice water for fifteen minutes twice everyday.

To use, dip a washcloth or cotton pad in rice water and pat gently over the affected area for ten to twenty minutes and then leave to dry before rinsing off.

You can use rice water as an everyday facial cleanser. Simply use a cotton ball or pad, dip into rice water and massage gently over your face for about ten minutes. Then let the water dry up on your face so that the nutrients can be absorbed. After using, you will notice that your skin looks and feels more radiant.

To enjoy this benefit, you’ll have to bath in rice water. Fill a muslin bag with half a cup of rice, add warm bath water and let to soak. Come back later and sieve to get the rice water out. You will find that your skin looks rejuvenated.

Rice water contains antioxidants like flavonoid, vitamin C, phenolic compounds and vitamin A that help fight free radical damage that occur as a result of sun exposure or aging. Rice water helps detangle the hair and improve its elasticity. A 2010 study found that rice water has the ability to increase the elasticity of the hair and reduce surface friction.
To use, shampoo and condition normally and then rinse the hair with a generous amount of cool rice water. Do this twice a week to get the best results.

Helps Hair Growth

The Yao women of China are known for their very long hair. They say this is also thanks to rice water. Most of the women there have hair lengths up to 55 inches. You will even find them in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest hair village.
To use this, use fermented rice water (you’ll see how to make it below) and add a few drops of lavender or rosemary essential oils. You will have to replace your shampoo with it and use it regularly to achieve the best result.

How to make your own rice water

Different ways exist to make rice water. Any type of rice can be used ;white long grain rice, jasmine rice, brown rice or whichever one else you find.
We’ll show you three ways to make rice water.

The Boiled rice water method

If you want rice water to use for a whole week in its diluted forms for a hair rinse or face mask, boil some rice the way you usually would and use more water this time (it’s the water you need, remember?). Once the rice is cooked, strain the water. It will contain a high concentration of nutrients. We know you would rather use it with the high concentration of nutrients but we suggest you dilute it a bit into a cup of clean water. Store it in the refrigerator and over. It should last you for a week.

No-boil quick method

If you’re in haste, you could simply add half a cup of rice and two cups of water and leave for fifteen minutes. Strain the rice and use the water to wash your face and hair.

Fermented rice water

This is for the people who are patient enough. This kind is believed to be the most effective method because if the pH change that happens as a result of the fermentation. Letting the rice water ferment helps get the pH close to the natural pH of the hair. It also leads to the release of pitera, a chemical that promotes the regeneration of cells.
To make, follow the no-boil method and let it sit in a jar for two days. If you stay in a tropical environment or generally, an environment that is warm, it could ferment in one day. You should be able to tell that it is fermented from the smell.
You can rinse your hair with it or use as a face wash after diluting with a cup or two of warm water.
You can store the rest in a refrigerator and keep using till it’s finished.
